Hey, Yana! Nice portfolio! Where does your love for astrophysics and general relativity stem from?
It honestly began with reading tons of popular science books (which soon translated into textbooks lol)! Some of my favorites are definitely The Theory of Everything, Brief Answers to the Big Questions, and A Brief History of Time—yes, I know I'm a Stephen Hawking fanatic—and surely, Kip Thorne's Black Holes and Time Warps! I don't really think there is anything particularly special about it, but perhaps my passion was nurtured due to how intriguing astrophysics seemed to my small, little brain. (Oh, and also probably because I watched Interstellar so many times!)
What's the hardest part about balancing so many activities?
Definitely finding time! I've learned that you literally don't have to balance everything—there will be times where you need to drop certain aspects and let others prevail, whether it's an upcoming test or a club meeting! You just have to learn to manage your time and prioritize! That honestly comes with finding what you actually enjoy! When you're passionate, those long hours don't feel like a chore; they feel like progress!
What exactly is "Space Bioinformatics" and why does it matter?
Let's admit it, this is a very niche field! In simple terms, it's taking the massive amounts of biological data generated in space (like how an astronaut's genes express differently in microgravity) and using computational tools to make sense of it. It's crucial because as we push for longer missions—think Mars or beyond—we need to know precisely how the human body reacts at a molecular level so we can develop countermeasures (like the drug repurposing I'm working on!) before they even leave the atmosphere!
For someone just starting in coding or astrophysics, what's your top advice?
Start with small, messy projects! Don't wait until you 'know enough' because you never will—the field moves too fast. Pick a small problem (like plotting a simple orbit or making a tiny text game) and Google your way through the errors. My first codes were disastrous, but they were mine. For astrophysics, read widely, but also learn the math—it's the language the universe speaks!
